Folaship – “Afrika” (Mother Land)

My friends in the US are always asking me what it’s like growing up in Africa. The best way I express myself is through music so I decided to create ‘Motherland‘, my new extended play EP. I was inspired to tell my personal African stories and share my rich cultural heritage with the rest of the world.

In contrast to common media portrayals of a poverty stricken corrupt Africa, I wanted to show the beautiful side of Africa that I know, with the song like “Afrika” on this EP. Listening to educational folk stories known as tales by moonlight was one of my favourite things growing up in Nigeria. It was very educational, taught me moral values, and was also my first introduction to performance, music, dance, and storytelling.

My heritage is beautiful and colourful. I am a Black African and I am proud. Africa is our origin either we are black or white we are all from motherland and we can all embrace its love and beauty.
